Hot Detox Yoga: Twist, Breathe, Sweat
When you think of a spa, what comes to mind is a place to rejuvenate and detox. Most day spas offer massage, and detox can be accelerated with a good massage. Yoga is another service that is associated with a spa, and with the right flow of isometric postures, deep breathing, and infrared sweating, detox of toxic substances can be greatly enhanced.
SOL SPA, the world’s first 24 hour day spa, has produced an excellent “Hot Detox Yoga” program designed to provide a stellar workout with a great detox effect based on the use of a flow of postures choreographed for detox and practiced inside of an infrared sauna. The combination of twisting postures and isometric holds with deep breathing along with 125 degrees of infrared heat forcing more sweat makes for a yoga detox session like no other and is available at SOL SPA on a 24/7 basis.
The 1,2,3 approach of twisting, proper breathing and sweating are the keys to a great detox session. Twisting postures compress the internal organs, and upon releasing from a compression hold the body feels as though there is a flush. It can be compared to wringing out of a wet towel. Through this process organs are massaged and stimulated into a more effective digestive process, and thus a more efficient excretion of toxins and toxicants from the body.
How does deep breathing accelerate detox? One of the main jobs for your lungs is to bring fresh air into your body and to remove waste gases. This can be understood with the explanation from the American Lung Association below:
At each cell in your body, oxygen is exchanged for a waste gas called carbon dioxide. Your bloodstream then carries this waste gas back to the lungs where it is removed from the bloodstream and then exhaled. Your lungs and respiratory system automatically perform this vital process, called gas exchange. (1)
Sweating inside of an infrared sauna is especially effective for detox too. Sweating can be considered a secondary method of detox for the body. Studies have shown that sweat induced from an infrared sauna session has up to seven times more heavy metals and other toxic substances than the sweat induced from traditional saunas.
Toxic wastes that cannot be discharged from the body by the liver and kidneys wind up being stored in fat cells. Infrared energy absorption goes to work at the cellular level to improve circulation and thereby, through oxidation, accelerates the removal of toxins from cells for exit through digestion, exhalation, and sweat.
Despite the rants of some yoga “experts” who would have you believe that there is no detox from sweating, the science begs to differ. The Journal of Environmental and Public Health published a report in 2012 that presented evidence from numerous studies showing high levels of toxic substances identified in sweat. Note the excerpt below:
Arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury may be excreted in appreciable quantities through the skin, and rates of excretion were reported to match or even exceed urinary excretion in a 24-hour period. This is of particular interest should renal compromise limit urinary excretion of toxic elements. (2)
A good day spa should offer a detox program. We are bombarded with toxins and toxicants every day and unless we supplement our body with external methods of detox improvements the buildup of toxic stores in our fat cells will eventually cause our bodies harm. Maybe it’s time to take your detox to another level with a Hot Detox Yoga program!
